Show Notes

Season 2, Episode 27: As we head into election season, I felt spotlighting a candidate or two at the local level might be of interest given the importance of local individuals making an investment in public service. I had the honor of speaking with Marilyn Koziatek for this episode. She is a candidate for the Los Angeles Unified School Board. In addition to her work with the Valley Industry Commerce Association (known as VICA), and her career in the k-12 school system, her dedication to advancing positive social change through public service is an inspiration!

Marilyn Koziatek Bio: Marilyn Koziatek earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Southern California and a master's degree from Johns Hopkins University. Her professional experience includes working as a programs director at Granada Hills Charter High School. Koziatek has served as chair of the Education Committee with the Valley Industry Commerce Association and as a member of the Education Advisory Committee for the 38th California Assembly. Marilyn’s mom and dad were both the first in their families to attend college. Her mother's parents had no more than an 8th grade education working on a ranch in Oklahoma. Their experience taught Marilyn that the key to a bright future is public education. They also had a deep belief in serving others and speaking up against injustice. When Marilyn was a child, her family travelled the world on humanitarian missions, building school houses, and opening prenatal clinics in small villages in Africa, Pakistan, and Nepal. During that time, Marilyn survived typhoid, and her family was evacuated from Sierra Leone in the middle of a civil war. Marilyn’s father served in the U.S. Army, and now works at the LA County Department of Child and Family Services. Her mom is a retired caregiver for children and seniors. Public service is a family tradition.
